Nancy Weis’s Website of the Week: Visuwords

http://www.visuwords.com/

“Visuwords™ uses Princeton University’s WordNet, an opensource database built by University students and language researchers. Combined with a visualization tool and user interface built from a combination of modern web technologies, Visuwords™ is available as a free resource to all patrons of the web.”

When you enter a word, Visuwords draws a diagram showing synonyms and related words, and each is connected by color-coded pathways.  An aqua pathway indicates “is a kind of.”  A green one means “causes”.  A gray dotted line indicates the derivation of the word.  Verbs are indicated by green dots and nouns by purple ones.

Visuwords is a fascinating and visually interesting way of looking at the meanings of words.
